3 Alexandrian Bronze Units: Alexander 'the Great', Philip II & Ptolemy I. Descriptions: 1) Alexander III 'the Great' “Kings of Macedon” Æ Unit, Sardes mint (ca. 336-323 BCE). 16 mm; 3.90g. Obv: Shield with caduceus (or kerykeion) on boss. Rev: ‘B’ - ‘A’. Macedonian helmet. Controls flanking bushels, kerykeion to left w/ ‘TI’ monogram below helmet, rose to right. 2) Philip II “Kings of Macedon” Æ 11 Unit (ca. 359-336 BCE). Philip II was the father of Alexander the Great. 16mm, 8.1g. Obv: Diademed head of Apollo, facing right. Rev: Nude youth on horseback galloping right, monogram below. History: This coin was designed to immortalize Philip's own victory in the equestrian events at the Olympic games in 356 BC, the year of Alexander the Great’s birth. Philip II was an Olympic champion 3 times: at the 106th Olympics in 356 BCE he won a race riding his horse; at the 107th Olympics in 352 BC he won the 4-horse chariot race; and at the 108th Olympics in 348 BC he was the winner of the 2-colt chariot races. (Ref: SNG Cop 582-612var). 3) Ptolemy I Soter Æ 18 Bronze Obol (305-285 BCE). 12mm; 2.9g. Issued by the Ptolemaic Kingdom of Egypt. Mint mark on left lower portion on reverse is faded (probably Alexandria). Obv: Bust of Ptolemy I to right, wearing diadem and aegis around his neck. Rev: Eagle facing left with closed wings standing on thunderbolt. History: Ptolemy I was one of Alexander the Great’s most trusted generals. He became ruler of Egypt and ruled from 323 BCE-283 BCE, founding the Ptolemaic dynasty. The Macedonian pharaohs continued to rule over Egypt until the Roman conquest in 30 CE.
