First edition of what is the first American textbook on the subject of Economics; In 1818 McVickar founded the first separate chair in political economy at Columbia University. He used as a basis for his textbook the Britannica Encyclopedia entry by J. R. McCulloch added substantial notes and a four page analysis of 'Economical Science in America' and is regarded as the first study of the history of economic thought in America. Ex-lib marking; 1/2 calf marbled boards. Covers strong with moderate Scuffing on edges and spine,most of spine lettering lost, hinges lightly cracked. Light toning throughout text block.
