Description
[Exploration] Hawks, Francis L. Narrative of the Expedition of an American Squadron to China Seas and Japan. A.O.P. Nicholson, Washington, 1856. 3 volumes. 4to. Original dark green and brown blind stamped covers, gilt spine ruling and lettering with a ship design, all spine gilt mostly faded. Two additional full page color lithographs (page 261 and 357) laid in Volume I, beautifully illustrated Volume I with 90 lithographic plates including the suppressed bathing plate which is not present in most copies, a great many of the plates in colors, and with the 3 "facsimiles" of Japanese woodblock prints in colors; 6 maps and charts (2 folding); 79 woodcuts in the text; Volume II with 79 woodcuts in the text, 4 coloured lithographs of Chinese scenes; 2 natural history engraved plates; 6 hand-coloured lithographs of birds; 10 hand-coloured steel-engraved plates of fish; 5 lithographs of shells, 2 hand-coloured; 16 diagram plates of winds and currents; the 14-page facsimile of the Japanese language version of the U.S.-Japan treaty, the English version and 17 large folding charts on 16 sheets; Volume III - Zodiac Light Observations by George Jones from the U.S. Steam-Frigate Mississippi April 1853 to April 1855 containing has 352 charts depicting zodiacal light with a text page, the main defects with the text is some foxing of plate at page 82 in Volume I otherwise plates uniformly bright and clean, Volume II has age browning of portions of text, there is water staining of the outside margins of page 297. Sabin pp. 159-60; Cordier Japonica 513-4; Cordier Sinica 2122-3; Bennett 88; Hill 1332., P. Volume I rebacked in tan buckram with original spine laid down with two small spots missing original cloth, Volume two spine gilt fair with the set of 17 large folding maps at end of Volume II still in tact but loosening. Volume II spine browned due to sunning and light chips at spine ends, otherwise bindings still solid and serviceable. Previous owner name on upper pastedown "W. S. Howard." Recent bookplates in all 3 volumes.
