Item Details
Description

HARLEM VALLEY GUN CLUB, NEW YORK SILVER OVERLAY HUNTING PICTORIAL GLASS DECANTER, cobalt blue glass, bulbous triangular body with two flattened or pinched sides, the bottle having extensive silver overlay decorations to front panel and shoulder, depicting a well-outfitted rider on horseback following closely behind three hunting dogs or hounds, with a fence and trees in the background, decorated in script "Harlem Valley / Gun Club" to shoulder and marked "STERLING" to the left of the landscape, having additional silvering around mouth/neck and geometric silvering applied atop the matching ground glass stopper. Circa 1930. 9 1/4" HOA.
Catalogue Note: The Harlem Valley of New York refers to an area of the Appalachian Mountains in eastern Duchess County encompassing the towns of Dover, Pawling, and others. An area with ample woods, swamps, and natural beauty, and less than 100 miles from New York City, it is no surprise that hunting is a popular pastime there. References to the Gun Club are scant, but newspaper records indicate they placed sixth in a 1933 invitation shoot/competition amongst several Long Island and downstate NY clubs including the Larchmont Yacht Club, the Westchester Gun Club, and the Nassau Trapshooting Club of Mineola. This decanter may have been commissioned for use at the Club's headquarters/meeting place, or perhaps privately for a proud member of the club to use at home.

Condition

Very good condition with some minor losses to silvering, an area where silver is peeling at stopper, and some very light nicking at stopper's outer edges.
