Description
Antique French Hand Painted Miniature Portrait of Empress Josephine by Paul Delaroche (1797 - 1856) France
Measure 2 1/2"in H x 1 1/2"in W and 4 1/2"in H x 4"in W with frame
Known for: Academic history easel and mural painting, teaching
Name variants: Hippolyte-Paul Delaroche
Biography: Delaroche focused more on English history than French, and the English found his 1828 painting, The Death Of Queen Elizabeth, quite sensational. In both countries, Delaroche was involved in Restoration decorative paitning, and in France, he completed in 1837 a mural series of the history of the École des Beaux-Arts. Five years before that, in 1832, when he was age 35, he became the youngest 19th century artist elected to the Institute National des Sciences et des Arts. Living most of his life in Paris, he was born and deceased there. Influences of Delaroche outlived him as he is credited with contributing much to the style and subjects of Regis François Gignoux, who became in important Hudson River School painter in New York, and on artists who formed the Pre-Rafaelite movement directed to Realism and away from Romanticism.
