This lot consists of two Walt Whitman books: The Book Of Heavenly Death, limited to 500 copies, and Walt Whitman's Workshop, signed by the author and limited to 750 copies. Walt Whitman's Workshop: A Collection of Unpublished Manuscripts, Edited With An Introduction And Notes of Clifton Joseph Furness, is a presentation copy and limited first edition signed by the author and published in Cambridge in 1928 by the Harvard University Press, with a date of 1928 and "This edition is limited to 750 copies, and the type has been distributed" on the copyright page. The book is 1/2 bound, with three slightly raised bands, gilt lettering and Harvard's logo on the spine, gray boards, blank endpapers, the presentation page says "This is James D. Henderson's copy of Walt Whitman's Workshop. With the compliments of Clifton Joseph Furness April 28, 1937", a frontis photograph of Walt Whitman, the title page, a three-page Preface with uncut pages, an Illustrations page (uncut), an Introduction with uncut pages, and 285 pages of text, with Notes and uncut pages. The book measures 10 3/4 x 8 1/4 in. wide, with a tight binding and clean pages and text, the photos and illustrations are ver clean, and just a touch of wear on the crown and even less on the heel, and a tad of rubbing at one tip.The second book is The Book Of Heavenly Death, a second edition published in 1907 and limited to 500 copies. The book has a paper label in the spine, gray-blue boards, blank endpapers with remnants of an older bookplate on the front paste-down, a facsimile page of Whitman's endorsement for a book of poetry he wrote, the limitation page which reads "Of This book, five hundred copies have been printed on Van Gelder hand-made paper and the tripe distributed", a frontis photograph of Walt Whitman, the title page which reads "The Book of Heavenly Death By Walt Whitman Compiled From Leaves Of Grass By Horace Traubel, Portland, Maine, Thomas B. Mosher MDCCCCVII" [1907], with Mosher's red anchor device in the middle of the page, with the copyright date of 1905 and the edition information on the copyright page, five pages of Contents, a nine-page Preface, 95 pages of text (the last one is unnumbered), and a seven-page Index, for a total of 103 pages in the book. Walt Whitman (1829 - 1892) was an American poet, essayist, and journalist, and one of the most influential poets in American history. Whitman incorporated both transcendent- alism and realism in his writings and is often called the father of free verse. His work was controversial in his own time, particularly his 1855 book of poetry Leaves of Grass. It was his major poetry collection, and he paid for its publication with his own money, the book became very popular and very controversial: some people described it as obscene because of its overt sexuality - the book was notable for its discussion of delight in sensual pleasures at a time when such candid displays were considered immoral, and Whitman was subject to derision by many contemporaries critics. Over time, however, the the collection has infiltrated popular culture and became recognized as one of the central works of American poetry. Horace Traubel (1858 - 1919) was an American essayist, poet, magazine publisher and author who was closely associated with the Arts and crafts movement in the United States; he published a monthly literary magazine called The Conservator from 1890 until the time of his death, and although a poet of note in his own right, he is best remembered as the literary executor and biographer of his friend, poet Walt Whitman. The book measures 7 1/2 x 6 in. wide and is in good condition. The binding is tight and the pages and text are clean, with light soiling on the spine and boards, and the bookplate remnant on the front paste-down, and between the two books, a neat grouping of Walt Whitman books. #13 #1523
