Description
"Animal Homes" A National Geographic pop-up action book, pictures by Jeffrey Terreson, paper engineering by John Strejan, published by National Geographic Society, 1989. Text and pop-up panoramas depict how animals build homes for protection and to raise their young.
Illustrated hard boards [a little edge wear]; 9" x 9.1/2"; 6 double page multi-functional pop-up panoramas, signs of usage, a few very small issues, very good condition for such fine and highly complex pop-up engineering.
"A magnificent book, children LOVE the pop-ups and pulling the tabs to see what else is hiding. Just enough dialogue to convey information on the various animals without the children getting restless: a family of foxes, flying squirrels; building a birds nest (an incredible "pop-out"), the beaver dam, the bee hive all mind boggling 3-d effect. I've been a school volunteer for 5 years Kindy to 3rd grade and on a scale of 1 to 10 it's a 10." [a private review]
John Strejan (1933-2003) was an American illustrator and paper engineer. Compared to earlier pop-ups, Strejan's work was noted for a dynamic use of motion, using the unfolding of the mechanism to animate the design.
After attending Portland State University, Strejan began his career in the city as an illustrator and designer in advertising, moving to Los Angeles in 1958. As well as working for advertising agencies, he was art director for Teen magazine and Bullock's department store. In 1965 he began working on the design of pop-up books for Elgin Davis at Graphics International. He went on to participate in the creation of more than 50 books, as a freelance author, illustrator and designer of pop-up mechanisms. He also created pop-up models of the Cinderella Castle and Getty Center, designed posters for Toy Story, and is credited as a production designer on a short animated film, Pinocchio (1987).
