In the world of desktop castings for smokers, this quite possibly could be the granddaddy of most. A solid bronze casting, with the base having 12 positions that would hold cigars standing up. There are dual elephants gracing the urn with their trunks projecting down and holding the smaller urns that hold the matches. It has the original cast lid with the original insert, most likely used as an ashtray. The casting is in amazing relief. The detail of the heads of the elephants with the tusks and the jewelry on their heads is very reminiscent of the period. There is no maker mark noted on the bottom, however this was not a bargain basement casting; dating to 1880, these types of desktop cigar and match holders are extremely uncommon. CONDITION: From the elephant's head casting to the elephant head adornment to the urn in the middle and the original cast lid, the patina is phenomenal, with a great aged look.
