Item Details
Description
A FRENCH CHINOISERIE FAIENCE FOO LION CLOCK, MAJORELLE WITH JAPY FRÈRES CLOCKWORKS, NANCY, 1860s-1870s, the Persian turquoise blue parcel gilt painted mythical beast having a flaming tail, and swirling star fur, fiercely guards a mystical orb or pearl of wisdom with a blue underglaze spiral ground centering a Qing Dynasty style collar painted in a faux cloisonné, the porcelain dial with Roman numeral hours, dual key wind face marked, "Majorelle á Nancy," the clockwork with Japy Frères pastille dating approximately to 1867-1873, with associated pendulum and bell, rising from swirling rocks and rocky outcropping on an oval foot. Height: 15" Width: 14" Depth: 7"

Other Notes: The clockworks have a Japy Frères pastille that dates from 1867-1873. Louis Majorelle (1859-1926) did not return to Nancy, France to run the family business until after his father Auguste Majorelle (1825-1879) passed away in 1879. A seamless continuation of the Majorelle dynasty, the chinoiserie stylization of the exterior of the present clock fits well into both Aestheticism design, while transitioning into Art Nouveau taste. Louis Majorelle is most well known for innovatively transforming furniture and interior design of the late 19th century, contributing to the Art Nouveau period, prolifically, until his death in the 1920s. By this time the style ultimately fell out of fashion, favoring the more severe Art Deco modern design.
Condition
The base has heavy repairs, inpainting, and restoration. The pendulum has a snaped end on the pendulum side but still hangs. The chime bell was likely replaced. Minor surface wear throughout, rubbing and loss of gilt and enamel.
