A CHINESE EXPORT BLUE AND WHITE WITH MANDARIN PALLET ENAMELED PORCELAIN BOWL, EUROPEAN FIGURAL SUBJECT AND LANDSCAPE, QING DYNASTY (1644-19123), QIANLONG REIGN (1736-1795), LATE 18TH CENTURY, CIRCA 1790, the parcel gilt bowl interior has a gold scroll-and-shell tendril pattern interior rim centering a spray of colorful flowers, the exterior of the bowl has underglaze "European" style blue and white scrolling floral reserves centering two mandarin pallet landscape scenes, one vignette is of a lady and "putti"-style, draped child runs along the road following behind a farmer pulling an ox as banners fly among trees near a pond, the second larger vignette presents a curious scene of three men seated at a circular table wearing tricorn hats, dressed in the fashion of the late 18th century, at their back a castle with dense forest and before them, a bay welcomes Dutch style ships, the scene evoking early 18th century commerce and trade, is interspersed by sepia tone grisaille enameled Canton style landscape scenes among dense flower sprays, raised on a circular foot. The plate pictured on page 953 resembles the "gold scroll-and-shell decoration," on the present bowl. This specific pattern was imported for the families or clans Mackay - born by the Barons Reay, Sandys, Sands, or Sandes beginning as early as 1740. The technique of underglaze blue decoration with overglaze enamel is called Wucai. The present lot demonstrates a transitional form of wucai enamel decoration, which is combined with the popular late 18th century Mandarin pallet enameling.
