Description
A William III silver nutmeg grater, probably London circa 1690-1700, possibly by Thomas Harris (free. 1670, d. 1703) Of teardrop form, twin hinged caps with stand-away hinges, each engraved with a foliate heart form cartouches, one side with traces of a crest. Ferrous grating plate. Partially obscured maker’s mark to the side, probably TH ligatured in a shaped punch. Length – 3.8 cm / 1.5 inches Weight – 30 grams / 0.96 ozt An example of a nutmeg grater bearing this mark, and very similiar engraved decoration, was sold Woolley and Wallis, 31 Oct 2023, lot 1650 (£1071 incl. prem)
