Description
Gregory Orloff (Russian/American, 1890-1981), "Chicago Scene (possibly the campus of the Illinois Institute of Technology)", c. 1935; oil/masonite, 22" x 22", unsigned; provenance: the estate of the artist, collection of Harlan J. Berk, Chicago. Important Chicago modernist painter and printmaker. A work by Orloff was included in the recent exhibit and accompanying catalog: Chicago Modern, 1893-1945: Pursuit of the New, at the Terra Museum. A statement included in the critique of the artist's work in that catalog would be relevant to this example as well: "Orloff is more interested in the manifestations of life as it is lived by the great mass of mankind than by the select few." REF: Art of Today, Chicago: 1933 , Jacobson.
