Description

Srivijaya was a maritime and commercial kingdom that flourished between the 7th and the 13th centuries, largely in what is now Indonesia. It was a religious centre in the region, and it adhered to Mahayana Buddhism and soon became the stopping point for Chinese Buddhist pilgrims on their way to India. The kings of Srivijaya even founded monasteries at Negapattam (now Nagappattinam) in southeastern India.Srivijayan art is characterized by a mix of influences in the early period, the Dvaravati as well as Indian and Indo-Javanese styles, and later, Khmer as shown in bronze-cast sculptures. Sits at 5 1/2 inches tall without the base. Museum piece. Originally from the Buckingham Collection. I discovered this when I got an email from the son of the (now deceased) previous owner who recognized the piece and wanted to let me now its history. , In an old catalog (Tibet House in New York, 1970's), they assigned it to 9th to 11thC Srivaja.
