Item Details
Description
A group of 16th century Persian small rugs, mostly in niche designs and preserved in the Topkapi palace museum, inspired the modern weavers of Hereke near Istanbul, and this small scatter is one of them. A border of inscription cartouches and octogrammes, frames the beige field and spandrels, with cloud bands, flowing vinery and lateral vases. Highlights in golden yellow. A cartouche near the niche apex gives the master weaver's name. The craft was revived in the 1960's after flourishing in the Interwar period. As new condition with an almost impossibly fine weave. Size: 2'7" x 4'0" (0.79 x 1.22 M).
