Chinese Porcelain Name Seal
Chinese Porcelain Name Seal
Item Details
Description
Chinese porcelain seal, approximately 2 inches in square dimension. It appears to be well-preserved, with no cracks or chips evident. The seal has a rectangular shape with artwork and calligraphy on at least three of its visible sides, and likely has carved characters on its base which would leave an impression when used with red ink or cinnabar paste. On one side, there's a painted scene that includes a rabbit amid foliage, indicating a possible connection to nature or personal symbolism. Another side shows a floral design, which is often used in Chinese art to symbolize beauty, purity, or the seasons. The calligraphy on the sides is executed in a flowing, cursive script, sometimes referred to as "grass script," which is highly stylized and often used for artistic expression. The characters on the bottom are likely the "chop" itself—the name or mark of the owner—carved in relief or intaglio to leave a signature imprint. These seals are often personal items, customized for the individual owner and used to stamp documents, artwork, or letters, serving a similar purpose to a signature in Western culture. The top of the seal features a bordered square which might also contain a smaller seal or an inscription, a common decorative element in such objects.Porcelain seals are less common than those made from stone or jade, making this piece potentially more unique. The quality of the artwork and calligraphy suggests that it may have been crafted by a skilled artisan. The decorative elements, along with the craftsmanship, can sometimes provide clues to the era in which it was made or to the status of its owner. For more specific information, such as the era it comes from, the artist who made it, or the exact meaning of the calligraphy, it would be advisable to consult an expert in Chinese art or a professional appraiser with knowledge of such artifacts.
