Pair of Italian "Devotionals"
second quarter 19th century, the larger example with a foil-lined perimeter, set on a Paris green ground and decorated with rolled paper details in the sky, the pediment supported on Corinthian columns with saints memorialized on the walls, the center with a giltwood altar table and altar sticks, over a reliquary, in a walnut-veneered frame, and the smaller example composed of cut paper work painted with watercolor and bead work, the center decorated with St. Catherine, framed with cut paper work, and the four corners decorated with vignettes from her life, in polychrome bead work.

The gilt-framed example is titled "Saint Catherine." The frame retains its original gilt surface, but has scattered losses, edge chips, and one corner with about four inches of gesso missing, all consistent with age. What is likely a silk backing with a few, tiny holes. Beadwork in generally good condition, but a few very small losses. The wooden-framed example is titled "S. Viti. M", likely referring to "Blessed Maria Fortunata Viti." The frame with a few, scattered woodworm holes to the frame. Interior is intact and presents well, but with some losses, consistent with age. Each element with patination. Losses to altar cloth. Altarpiece appears to have shifted to the left over time. One altar stick loose.
