Item Details
Description
Charles-Emile-Hippolyte Lecomte-Vernet (1821–1900) was a French painter belonging to a family with a strong artistic tradition. He was the grandson of Carle Vernet, a well-known French painter, and the son of Hippolyte Lecomte, a genre and portrait painter. Lecomte-Vernet continued the family legacy, making a name for himself as a history painter and military artist.Lecomte-Vernet's works often focused on military and historical subjects. He gained recognition for his depictions of battles, military scenes, and historical events. His paintings were marked by meticulous attention to detail, historical accuracy, and a vivid portrayal of action and drama. One of his notable paintings is "Napoleon III Visiting the Flood Victims of Tarascon in 1856," which depicts the French Emperor Napoleon III's visit to Tarascon during a flood. This work exemplifies Lecomte-Vernet's ability to capture both historical events and the human element within them.Lecomte-Vernet exhibited regularly at the Paris Salon, and his historical and military paintings were well-received. His dedication to accuracy and his skillful rendering of details contributed to his success as an artist. Lecomte-Vernet's work reflects the 19th-century interest in historical and military themes, and he remains recognized for his contributions to French academic painting during that period.
