Gordon Parks (1912–2006) was a highly influential American photographer, filmmaker, writer, and composer known for his groundbreaking work in documentary photography and as the first African American to direct a major Hollywood film. Born on November 30, 1912, in Fort Scott, Kansas, Parks faced numerous challenges as a young African American growing up in a segregated society.Parks first gained recognition as a photographer for the Farm Security Administration during the 1940s, capturing images that highlighted the struggles of African Americans and other marginalized communities.
