Description
A LIVERPOOL HERCULANEUM PEARLWARE JUG, DATED 1806
of 'Dutch' shape, the lower body engine-turned, applied with an angular handle, inscribed in gold below the spout J Wood Emperor of Dog Island and King of the Rummons 1806 within a green wreath, the sides printed with Love at Liberty, and Bacchanti in puce, the neck rim with broad blue lines, small blue sprigs flanking the handle, the rim also picked out in gold. 23cm high
Jugs of this shape are known to have been made at Herculaneum; see Alan Smith, Liverpool Herculaneum Pottery pls. 30a, 30b and 31. The significance of the inscription remains obscure, although it is possible the jug may have a possible connection to a Welsh Gypsy family - see Jarman (A.O.H) and Jarman (E), THE WELSH GYPSIES - CHILDREN OF ABRAM WOOD.
