Reputedly purchased from the auction at Shelton Abbey, Arklow, home of the earl of Wicklow, 16 October 1960 by Allen & Townsend, Dublin, but we have not been able to acquire a catalogue for this auction.
Clio and Terpsichore were two of the nine Hellenistic muses who inspired and protected the arts in Ancient Greece. The other muses were Euterpe, Thalia, Melpomeni, Erato, Polymnia, Urania, and Calliope. The muses were often depicted in ancient Roman art and again during the Italian Renaissance.
