Description
The sculpture is of a male moose, standing still, perceiving his surroundings for predators, food and perhaps a mate. The moose (North America) or Eurasian elk (Europe), is the largest extant species in the deer family. Moose are distinguished by the palmate antlers of the males. They are generally solitary and lessen their solitude briefly in the hopes of mating which occurs in their season of September and October. The bull stands majestically breaking the stillness and sounds of the deep forest with his heavy grunting sounds that can carry for 500 meters away. Moose are animals commonly found throughout North America that have been symbolic in Native culture since their tales began. Moose often stand for being headstrong, unstoppable, longevity, value, and integrity. Many boys had to seek totems of the Moose to show they had passed from childhood to manhood. The abstract, unrefined texture of it's surface give a certain tactility to the sculpture. The bull moose was cast using the age-old method of lost-wax casting and stained with a brown patina finish. He walks mounted upon a black marble base with the artist Milo's signature. The artist Milo lived most of his childhood in Andalusia, Spain. Influenced by an artistic family background, he began sculpting at the age of seventeen. After apprenticing with several accomplished sculptors both in America and Spain, he began his own work focusing equally on steel and bronze.
