Joaquin Alberto Vargas y Ch?vez was a Peruvian-American painter of pin-up girls. He is often considered one of the most famous of the pin-up artists. Vargas became famous in the 1940s as the creator of iconic World War-II era pin-ups for Esquire known as "Vargas Girls". Numerous Vargas paintings have sold and continue to sell for tens of thousands around the world. Between 1940 and 1946 Vargas produced 180 paintings for the magazine. The nose art of many American and Allied World War II aircraft was inspired and adapted from these Esquire pin-ups, as well as those of other artists. One of the true giants of American illustration, Alberto Vargas has created an art style so sensuous, so exquisite, that for the past six decades his magnificent paintings of women have come to embody the fantasies of three generations of women and men around the world.
