Item Details
Description
East Asia, China, late Ming Dynasty, ca. 16th to 17th century CE. A collection of 3 shallow blue-on-white Swatow ware dishes with calcite and marine encrustations on the surfaces. One has dark-blue and broad, abstract motifs. The next dish has a vase and bowl painted on the basin, and the last has floral motifs. As evident by the marine encrustations, these dishes were likely made for export to Southeast Asia and along the Maritime Silk Road and probably rested on the ocean floor as the result of a shipwreck that was carrying this pottery as cargo. One bowl has the National Museum of the Philippines label on it, indicating this was registered and / or sold by the museum - a common practice in the 20th century for overstocked artifacts. Size of largest: 4.75" Diameter x 1.5" W (12.1 cm x 3.8 cm)
