Description
Takahashi Shotei - Snowy Night with a Hazy Moon. Japanese woodblock print.
The first edition of this design was published between 1923 and 1936. The current print is from the 1930s.
Size of the image (excluding margins) in inches 14.9 x 6.5 (37.8 x 16.6 cm.)
The print is damaged, mainly due to white smudges at various places within the image. See next to the main figure, next to the boat and at two places in the sky. There is also browning within the image and changing of color, with the bushes and belt of the main figure initially being more green and less blue. On the back remnants of a previous mounting remain in the margin and a small note has been written in pencil.
Takahashi Hiroaki (Shotei) was born on January 2, 1871, in Tokyo with the given name of Takahashi Katsutaro. He was trained in Nihonga - traditional Japanese painting - by his uncle Matsumoto Fuko. In the literature the artist is usually called Takahashi Shotei or just Shotei. From 1907 on Takahashi Hiroaki designed large numbers of prints for Watanabe's print shop. He was one of the first printmakers joining the artisan "pool" of Watanabe. The prints were largely exported - mainly to Northern America and are still in high demand to this day.
