The sculpture depicts a Native woman standing, her body covered with a blanket. Her smooth face, rendered in lighter bronze, is visible; shrouded in mystery yet filled with strength and beauty. Signed dated and numbered at the base 1990 Edition 5/12 - measures 23.5" x 12" x 6", The wood stand makes it 25" tall . This particular work resembles the Seating Woman covered in a Blanket at the Minneapolis Institute of Art. Only in an edition of 12 this bronze has not been offered at auction according to recent auction records. Provenance: The Joyce Evans Native Collection, Camarillo, California Allan Houser was born Allan Capron Haozous June 30, 1914, he was the first member of his family from the Warm Spring Chiricahua Apache tribe born outside of captivity since Geronimo's 1886 surrender and the tribe's imprisonment (as prisoners of war) by the US government at Fort Sill until 1912. Houser executed the his first major sculpture commissioned 1948 at the Lawrence KS Indian School but it was also the first Major sculpture by a Native artist in the 20th century. It was named "comrade in morning'. Due to sharing his gifts and teaching, Houser is considered the Grandfather to all Contemporary Native Art.
