Item Details
Description
Native American, Southwestern United States, Navajo (Dine), ca. mid-20th century CE. A set of 5 hand-carved wood and fur kachina dolls dressed in velvet, satin, cotton, yarn, and hide clothes with sequins and beaded jewelry. Three are women painted with blue masks to represent the Yeibichai. The wooden feather headdress and green yarn collar symbolizes the Tasap Yeibichai, the Talking God Grandfather Katsina. These figures probably form part of healing ritual known as the Nightway ceremony - and the unmasked figure may represent a patient to be healed. The healing incorporates a dance featuring masked Yeibichai (6 men and 6 women), and a dancer embodying the Talking God. In this group there are 3 women dancers with blue faces, the Talking God, and the patient. Size of Tasap: 4.5" W x 12.75" H (11.4 cm x 32.4 cm); 13" H (33 cm) on included custom stand.
