Description
MELBA NELLIE: (1861-1931) Australian soprano. A fine vintage signed and inscrtibed sepia 7 x 12.5 photograph of Melba standing in a three-quarter length profile pose holding a small prayer book or bible in her hands, with a rosary over her left wrist and a chatelaine hanging from her waist, in costume as the young maiden Marguerite from Charles Gounod's opera Faust. Photograph by Spencer Shier of Melbourne (1925) and signed by him in pencil to the mount. Signed by Melba in bold, dark fountain pen ink to the lower photographer's mount, 'To Madame Rue, with all good wishes, Nellie Melba', and dated 1926 in her hand. One light, minor stain to the right border of the mount and with some minor traces of former mounting to the verso, otherwise VG
