Item Details
Description
Lionel Prewar Standard Gauge Outfit No. 52 with 53 Electric Loco with 181/180/182/extra 180 Passenger Car, all in C6 minus/C6 overall condition. This set was purchased by Al Osborn from the collection of John Davanzo. The locomotive is the round cab version 53, manufactured in 1920 - 1921 only - it is difficult to find and sought after by the collectors. This particular set is painted brown - the Loco is usually maroon and not known to have common brown color. It could therefore be a factory test color - Lionel was known to try different colors to see how they looked. If Lionel decided not to adopt the color for production, only one of a few pieces would exist. This may explain why this one is brown. The Observation Car with long platform is an early version, and a hard-to-find than the shorter platform. An extra 180 Car was added by John Davanzo - this car is lettered Parlor Car rather than Pullman variation? The original set was issued as a three car set. John Davanzo acquired the set is part of the collection he purchased 30 or 40 years ago. Nothing more is known of its origin. The set appears to be completely original without repaired or replaced parts. John took the Loco to a senior collector in New York to have the engine verified. The color was definitely a match to the early period brown.
