West Africa, Nigeria, Edo (Bini) peoples, ca. early to mid 20th century CE. A hand carved wooden mask from the Edo peoples of Nigeria, the descendants of the founders of the Benin Empire, in south and mid-western Nigeria. The mask has a pronounced forehead and stylized face beneath it, with a large coiffure above. A mask like this would have been worn in the Nkporo Ifugo masquerade along with a colorful and elaborate costume. Size: 5.6" W x 9.5" H (14.2 cm x 24.1 cm)

Provenance: ex Adeon Gallery, Chicago, Illinois, USA, acquired prior to 1970
