West Africa, Nigeria and Benin, Yoruba peoples, ca. 19th to early 20th century CE. A pair of linked human male and female representations, cast in bronze, with loop holes connected with a brass chain attachment. Each figure terminates in a long, thin, cast iron pin. These figures are known as edan, resembling the deity Onile, the owner of the earth, who has both male and female forms. These could be used only by highly esteemed society elders. Size of each half: 0.9" L x 1" W x 8.1" H (2.3 cm x 2.5 cm x 20.6 cm); 8.2" H (20.8 cm) on included custom stand.

Provenance: private Superior, Colorado, USA collection; ex-Adeon Gallery, Chicago, Illinois, USA, around 1974
