Japan, 20th century CE. A pair of papier-mache egg-shaped dolls, both painted bright red and both with women's faces and hair. The smaller one is wrapped in red, white, and gold cloth to simulate a kimono and other traditional clothing; the large one is painted bright red with gold, blue, and black details. These dolls signify Princess Daruma of Matsuyama, a figure meant to be a talisman for luck for women in childbirth and for the good bringing up of children. Size of largest: 5.75" W x 8.4" H (14.6 cm x 21.3 cm)
