Description: Copper-engraved map/chart. 33.3x48.7 cm (13x19¼"), on sheet 56.5x66 cm (22¼x26").Rare Mexican chart of Monterey Bay, based upon Spanish Surveys, one of the earliest obtainable printed maps of Monterey. Cyprus Point, the Mission de San Carlos, Spanish Fort, and anchorage points of the coastline are shown, along with Punto de Año Nuevo, Rio del Carmen and Medanos de Arena. It has been suggested by no less an authority than Jake Zeitlin, the late, long-time Los Angeles Bookseller, that the map was published by Arrowsmith in London; the quality of the paper and engraving suggest that this is possible. The present example has very wide margins and was never folded. OCLC/WorldCat locates seven copies of the chart in institutional libraries.
