Description
Indian Gilt Bronze Sculpture of the God Manjusri, probably late 19th-early 20th century in date, represents the Buddhist deity popular throughout Asia. He is a Bodhisattva who is generally shown with a sword and riding on a lion. The sword cuts through ignorance while the lion represents his ability to tame the wildness of the mind. In this representation he is finely cast with jewelry and animated scarf that frames the deity. The deity and lion are mounted on a base with lotus petal motifs. The base bears a stamp.
