From the Preface of the first edition: “…several of the illustrations are from original sketches of arms preserved in Continental museums and elsewhere. The author trusts that the notices of Hammerless Guns, Breech-actions and the Extracts from the Gun Trials, together with the details of numerous experiments, will enable the sportsman to decide upon the weapons required for any particular shooting, and…be of value to the inventor and gunmaker for reference.” Chapters include: Early Arms; Cannon; Early Hand-Firearms; The Percussion System; Breech-Loading Rifles; Sporting Shot Guns; Gun-Making—History and Description; Cartridges; Hammerless Guns; Gun Trials of 1875-1879 and Theories and Experiments. As comprehensive a book on the subject as one can find. Hundreds of illustrations. Thoroughly indexed. Not usually found in such sound condition. The very ends of tips just starting to show. Small bit of fraying to head of spine. Otherwise minimal rubbing to extremities. Front hinge showing cracks at top and bottom but still feels solid.
