Description
VICTORIA MAMNGUQSUALUK (1930-2016) QAMANI'TUAQ (BAKER LAKE)
Embroidered Vest, mid-late 1970s
duffle, stroud, embroidery floss, antler, and cotton thread, 22.25 x 20.5 x 1.25 in (56.5 x 52.1 x 3.2 cm)
signed, "ᒪᒍᓯᐊᓗ".
Provenance
Estate of Jean Blodgett.
Renowned for her dedication to illustrating Inuit legends and narratives, Victoria Mamnguqsualuk saw in this vest a captivating medium for her tales. At the front, two rounded inuksuit with vibrant flora nestled between their "limbs" stand sentinel at the fringes of the tableau revealed on the vest's reverse. A menagerie of creatures and human figures, with mouths wide and eyes cast skyward, fixate on a grand bird as it unfurls its wings in preparation for descent or take off. The flat expanse of felt is infused with a gentle suggestion of texture, a testament to Mamnguqsualuk’s extensive use of feather stitches crafted from multicoloured yarn. The portrayed beings and their environment are imbued with flowing designs and hues that contribute to the scene's surreal quality.
