Description
Ward, Virginia J. (American/Pittsburgh, 1889-1981), Maritime, 1955, watercolor on paper, signed lower right, 11.5 x 15.25 inches, in a wood frame 19 x 22.5 inches. Provenance: Exhibited 45th Associated Artists of Pittsburgh (1955) with remnants of the original tag on the back of the frame. Ward, who studied at Carnegie Institute of Technology (now Carnegie Mellon University), received additional training in France as a student of such distinguished artists as Fernand Leger, Charles Depiau and Astride Maillol. She also studied under pioneer abstract artist Hans Hofmann in Provincetown, Mass. A winner of many awards, her works were exhibited in art shows in Pittsburgh, Provincetown, New York and Paris. She was a former member of Associated Artists of Pittsburgh; National Association of Women Artists; and the Flower Arrangers Guild of Pittsburgh.
Condition
In seemingly good condition; heavy staining and mold to the mat and surrounding areas, but doesn't seem to affect the painting itself. Merchandise will be packed and transported by the purchaser at their own risk and expense.
