Description
MARY POPPINS (1964)/ BEDKNOBS AND BROOMSTICKS (1971) - Cherry Tree Lane Mailbox - A Cherry Tree Lane mailbox from Robert Stevenson's Mary Poppins as well as Stevenson and Ward Kimball's Bedknobs and Broomsticks. In Mary Poppins, Bert (Dick Van Dyke), a jack-of-all-trades, walked down Cherry Tree Lane, passing by an English-style mailbox, to house Number 17 where the Banks family resided, only to discover the persons inside were squabbling over the disappearance of the Banks children. During Mr. George Banks' (David Tomlinson) failed attempt to educate the children about the bank, Jane (Karen Dotrice) and Michael (Matthew Garber) fled and ran into Bert who took them home to Cherry Tree Lane where they sang "Chim Chim Cher-ee." "Chim Chim Cher-ee," music and lyrics created by Richard and Robert Sherman, was later awarded an Academy Award® for Best Song and the film awarded an Academy Award® for Best Music Score.

In Bedknobs and Broomsticks,Mrs. Hobday (Tessie O'Shea) escorted Miss Price (Angela Landbury) to the post office to retrieve a parcel from an English-style mailbox.

Created for set decoration, this mailbox was acquired from Walt Disney Studios in 2001 and kept in a private collection. It is made of wood painted red with a black base featuring wooden signs marked "17 Cherry Tree Lane" and "Hours of Collection" with notable information for the postman and an opening encased in red painted metal. This lot exhibits flaking paint and minor chipped wood. Dimensions: 24" x 24" x 65" (61 cm x 61 cm x 165.25 cm)
