William Kurtz (1833-1904). "Portrait of Udo Keppler," dated 1877, pastel, watercolor, and pencil on paper with gilded (?) background, measures 13.50 x 10 inches to matt edge, overall in frame 37 x 28 inches, signed lower left. CONDITION: Good, some toning. Housed in an elaborate carved and gilded Florentine frame (with losses, crackes, and repairs). Udo was the son of Joseph Ferdinand Keppler (1838 - 1894), an Austrian-born American cartoonist, caricaturist, and founder of Puck Magazine, who greatly influenced the growth of satirical cartooning in the United States. Udo J. Keppler (1872–1956), was also a political cartoonist and editor for Puck Magazine, a collector of Indian artifacts and an Indian activist. He had his name changed to Joseph Keppler, Jr. in honour of his father. He was an honorary chief of the Seneca nation, promoted Iroquois lacrosse teams, and obtained discount railroad fares for New York Indians. The papers of both father and son are held in the collection of the New York Historical Society.
