Coin Silver Presentation Beaker, William Alexander Williams (1787-1846), Alexandria, Virginia, 1834. Small cylindrical beaker with soldered ogee molded rim and base, impressed 'A.W. WILLIAMS' in rectangular reserve on bottom, the exterior wall inscribed 'To / Washington Hood / Lieut. US Army / As a grateful testimonial for his / beautiful design of the Steeple / of Christ Church in Georgetown / D.C. / PRESENTED / by the Committee of the Church / A.D. 1834', approx. 4.8 troy oz., diam. 2 7/8, ht. 3 1/2 in. Footnotes: Provenance Washington Hood (1808-40) surveyed the Ohio and Michigan state borders as well as territories west of the Mississippi River while serving on the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and Corps of Topographical Engineers. The beaker likely relates to the 1835 addition of a 'Wren-type' steeple to the first Christ Church building (1818-85).
