Lidded goblet Sibiu, ca. 1688, hallmark SH (Master Sebastian HANN, 1675?1713) Silver, gilded, cast, embossed, chased, openworked. The elegant lidded goblet has a bell-shaped foot, which is customary for the baroque style, and is decorated with large flowers and ranunculus leaves, or acanthus leaves bent up. The gold-plated, thin, cylindrical shaft is encased in a nodus formed from curved silver tendrils, with the tendrils merging into grasping heads towards the top. The tall, slightly truncated cone-shaped cuppa comprises an ornamental composition of medallions, formed from supple acanthus leaves, which frame large ranunculus flowers or tulips - decorative motifs that can be found in a similar way on the lid. The pommel is formed by a statuette depicting St. Christopher with the Child Jesus on his shoulders, leaning against a tree whose roots penetrate deep into the spherical globe below. H. 45 cm, 600 g. A similar cup was made by Johann Christoph Schwartz (a master craftsman who worked in Sibiu between 1689 and 1705), who spent two of his years as a journeyman in the workshop of master Sebastian Hann; the dating of the cup to 1690 (in the inscription with the name of the commissioner) and the common artistic features with the undated cup by Sebastian Hann indicate that the young master JCS was inspired by the cup he saw in the workshop of his teacher. The same depiction is also shown in a lidded cup of the very prolific but unidentified Brasov champion ''EV''. In the years 1680-1685 the latter was also active at the court of the Wallachian ruler ?erban Cantacuzino, as well as with his successor Constantin Brâncoveanu. Lit.: Roth (1922), cat.
