Four Ancient Terracotta Oil Lamps, Byzantine, Roman, North Africa - C. 100 BC - 700 AD. Group of ancient oil lamps comprising: A) Figural Oil Lamp, probably Syrian, ovoid form with stylized human head in relief at handle with a stylized "cross" between filling and wick holes, mold made, ring base, 1 5/8" h x 4 1/4" l x 2 1/8" w. B) Samaritan style pottery oil lamp with lug handle, design around central filling hole obscured with wear, rounded nozzle, 1 1/2" h x 4" l x 3" w. C) Roman North African Redware El Djem Oil Lamp w/ Chi-Rho, C. 200-400 AD, redware pottery oil lamp depicting a Chi-Rho symbol to central discus, with a geometric pattern to shoulders, consisting of rosettes and squares. Two filling holes, lug handle and a rounded canal nozzle, with circular ring to base. 2 3/8" h x 5 1/2" l x 3 5/8" w. D) Erotic Roman terracotta oil lamp, scene of two figures on central discus, voluted nozzle with rounded angular tip, Loss to handle. 1 1/8" h x 4" l x 2 3/4" w. Condition: Signs of wear and use commensurate with significant age. Provenance: Private Boca Raton, FL Collection, acquired in Paris, France between 1965 and 1968 and brought to the United States in 1969. Authenticated in 1968 by Gerard Levy, 17 Rue de Beune, Paris.
