Item Details
Description
Two oil paintings of "L'Avenir" Early 20th Century Oil on Canvas Ship Paintings one signed A. J. Jansen
Signed pair of L'Avenir Oil on Canvas Ship Paintings Attributed to Adrianus Johannes Jansen (Dutch 1863-1943) Signed "A J Jansen". Adrianus Johannes Jansen was a Dutch ship-portrait painter who was born in Gouda . No other information could be found.

The L'Avenir, a renowned Belgian tall ship, was built in 1908 in Germany. Recognized as a five-masted barquentine, she was specifically designed for the training of young cadets, facilitating voyages from Europe to South America. These journeys not only provided practical training for the cadets but also preserved the longstanding traditions of sailing during an age that was rapidly transitioning to steam-powered vessels. However, after serving numerous years as a training ship, L'Avenir was eventually sold and renamed "Kurt". Tragically, in the throes of World War II, she met her demise when she was scuttled in the North Sea.
