Description
A captivating green patinated cast bronze statue after Auguste Rodin's "Le Desespoir" ("Despair,"). Part of the famous "The Gates of Hell" series, inspired by Dante's epic poem, this piece features a nude male figure in a pose of deep contemplation and despair. The man's face is obscured, his right hand buried in his hair, while his left arm forms a closed fist, symbolizing internal struggle. The clenched toes further add to the intensity of the emotion portrayed. Impressed artist signature A. RODIN. The interior of the cast bronze exhibits a heavy patina and oxidation, consistent with its age. The original c.1890 marble work is housed in the Saint Louis Art Museum. Provenance; a private collection.
