This valiant story of how young George Washington was drawn into his country's struggle for independence gives readers a vivid perspective on a crucial era in American history--and on the life of a revolutionary hero.

George Washington grew up in the English colony of Virginia. He was tall and strong, fair in judgment, and respected by his friends as a good leader. As he grew older, George saw how England took advantage of the American colonies—and he didn't like it. When the colonies declared their independence, George was chosen to lead their army as its general. And when the colonies won their freedom, George was elected to lead the new nation as its first president.

Joan Heilbroner is best known for her first book, Robert the Rose Horse, which was published in 1961. Acquired by Dr. Seuss when he was editor of Beginner Books, it has been in print for more than 50 years. Her inspiration to write A Pet Named Sneaker came from her grandchildren, Quentin and Katrina, and their talented pet snake, Plato. A graduate of Columbia University, Ms. Heilbroner worked as a school librarian until her retirement.

Victor Mays (1927-2015), American navy captain, writer, artist and illustrator. He joined the U.S. Navy just before the end of World War II and he was sent to Ohio State University for officer training. Mays transferred to Yale in 1946 and took his Bachelor of Arts degree from there in 1949 with a combined major in history, English and art. He again served in the Navy during the Korean War from 1952 to 1954 and afterward remained in the Naval Reserve as an officer and eventually attained the rank of captain.

Following his discharge from active duty he concentrated on free-lance illustration. He is known for historically accurate illustrations having illustrated more than eighty books for other authors, not counting book jackets and magazine illustrations. From 1977 he exclusively devoted his talents to watercolors of a marine historical nature, and his more recent works are now seen in art galleries.
