Pair of Samuel Marx (1885-1964) Figural Andirons, United States, c. 1940, wrought iron, unmarked, ht. 18, wd. 8, dp. 20 3/4 in. Provenance: Collection of Morton D. May, St. Louis, Missouri. May was director, chairman of the board and chief executive officer of the May Department Stores Company in St. Louis. He was also a well-known art collector and philanthropist. In 1940 Marx designed and built an International Style house in Ladue, Missouri for May, where he also designed and furnished the interiors. Marx's wife was a member of the May family and Marx designed several department stores as well as a residence in Los Angeles for the family. By descent in the family. Note: An identical pair of andirons is pictured in the library of Marx's own Chicago apartment.
