Description
Collection of Original Illustrations from the Book Superpower: The Making of a Steam Locomotive by David Weitzman
An outstanding opportunity to own the original artwork from the book Superpower: The Making of a Steam Locomotive. These are the original full size drawings used as the illustrations for the book. The sysnoposis of the book from School Library Journal / Jeffery French is as follows,

"Superpower depicts the construction of the new ``Berkshire'' steam locomotive through the eyes and experiences of 18-year-old Ben, who begins work with his father at the Locomotive works (the Loco) in mid-1920s Lima, Ohio. In addition to explaining the construction of the new, immense locomotive, Weitzman also conveys the era's sense of community, tradition, and pride in craftsmanship. In the fictional account of his first months at the Loco, Ben learns about the design of locomotives, and during his time as a ``helper'' visits several different parts of the Loco, observing and assisting in the work of the foundry, the forge, the machine shop, and the boiler shop. Ben learns how and why different parts are manufactured by the different processes, until, near the end, he helps in the assembly of the locomotive (in seven days) and sees it come to life for its first trip.

The book was released in 1986 and subsequently the author took the original artwork out on a tour along with the book. One of the stops on tour was Detroit Michigan. It was at that stop that Detroit entrepreneur and at the time owner of Lionel Trains Inc. Richard Kughn encountered the artwork and was moved to purchase the entire collection which then resided in Kughn's personal collection for the remainder of his life.

Included are twenty four original works. We know that this is not the entire book, we believe there to be six peices missing from the total group. These peices have disappeared over the years and we have been unable to locate them. The art two custom designed art shipping crates on wheels allowing the work to travel as an exhibit. We are comfortable in saying that we can ship this collection anywhere it needs to go safely.

While we have shown many photos of the work here, we invite serious parties to inquire with specific questions they may have. The work is available to view by appointment at our Lafayette Indiana warehouse or we can arrange a video call with prospective buyers.

Do not miss this opportunity to own an outstanding collection of railroad artwork!
