Description
Victor M. Reyes (Mexican, 20th century) Three watercolor paintings of Maya people, signed on lower right, ca. 1940s -1950s CE. A group of three watercolor paintings of ancient Maya priests and an archer, dressed in fine garments with some historical accuracy to headdresses and jewelry. All are painted in vibrant colors highlighted with metallic pigments, mounted on blue paper backings, and signed on the lower right corner by the artist. The first is titled as "Sacerdote" (Priest), shown in profile holding a vessel. The second is "Kinyah (Sacerdote de idolos (Gran sacerdote de Chichen" (Priest of idols (Great priest of Chichen)). The Maya word "kinyah" translates to casting lots or divining the future. This priest stands on elevated stone steps with smoke wafting from a brazier, perhaps part of a fortune telling ritual. The third painting is a "Guerrero - Flechador" (Guerrero Archer). Size: 15" L x 12" W (38.1 cm x 30.5 cm)
