Indonesian Ceremonial Shoulder Cloth (Selendang), Minangkabau, Sumatra, Early 20th C. Crafted from silk and adorned with supplementary weave using metallic thread, this rectangular silk shawl features a spacious green field at its center. Framed by narrow, elongated edges and broader, shorter edges, the linear silk design is gracefully enhanced by the shimmering gold of supplementary weft weaving. Notably, the green stripes, contrasting with the green field, are artfully printed to mimic the appearance of tie-dye ikat technique. Traditionally worn by women, this versatile textile could be folded in half lengthwise to serve as a shoulder cloth and carryall. Worn beneath the breast, it provided a secure and stylish way to carry small items such as cash within its folds. Size: 7'2'' x 3'0'' (218 x 91 cm). Provenance: Ex Yosi Barzilai collection.
