Description
Philippines Head Cloth and Small Tapestry Panel (Lakhan), 19th C., Early 20th C. This 19th-century head cloth, known as 'pis syabit,' from the Philippines and is specifically crafted for a Tausug man. Woven with a cotton warp and silk weft, its tapestry technique showcases symmetrical and geometric motifs in shades of purple, pink, and gray. The Tausug people, part of the larger Moro ethnic group, inhabit regions across the Philippines, Malaysia, and Indonesia. Additionally, accompanying this piece is an early 20th-century Small Tapestry Panel (Lakhan), featuring a double-facing band of silk woven in a tapestry technique. These bands were traditionally used at the joints of larger panels to form a sarong. Size: Size: 37'' x 32'' (94 x 81 cm) and 58'' x 5'' (147 x 13 cm). Provenance: Ex Yosi Barzilai collection.
