Description
Dervish Embroidered Chapan, Tajikistan, Early 20th C., 3'8'' x 3'11'' (112 x 119 cm). See Plate 75, Khans, Nomads & Needlework : Suzanis and Embroideries of Central Asia, 2012. "This dervish chapan (robe) was collected in the Fergana Valley where its wearer was a Tajik. Short basting stitches form the design in the field of many dervish chapans including this one. A double thickness of heavy cotton cloth protects the wearer against the cold especially as they might need to spend the night outdoors occasionally." RF.
